Happy New Fraud.....

What a way to start out the year! Although I can hardly hear anything because my ears are still plugged, I am finally feeling good enough to start taking care of some things. So I got my coffee and settled in front of the computer to read some emails that have been waiting. I found one from my credit card company that I ALMOST deleted thinking it may be a promo kind of deal, but I decided to check it out. It instructed me to contact them immediately reference some suspicious activity on my card. The email was sent yesterday. I called the number on the back of my card, rather than the one given in the email just in case it was a phony phishing scam.

Unfortunately it was true. Some lowlife pond scum had gotten ahold of my credit card number and used that information to charge nearly two thousand dollars worth of stuff, mostly airline tickets. My card company says I will not be held responsible for these charges…thank God. They will be investigated and I am praying that the lowlifes will be caught and prosecuted harshly. My account is now closed, another one has been opened and I should receive my new card in a week. How they got my information, I do not know. I do a lot of online shopping but have all the safeguards on my computer and always make sure the site is secure and well-known. I have used this card in stores also, but it rarely leaves my hand since I swipe it myself. Lately I have used it to pickup prescriptions at the drive-up window and then its out of my sight. Maybe that’s when information was taken off of it. I just don’t know and not knowing makes you suspicious of everyone. Nevertheless, I will not be doing that anymore.

I have to give kudos to my credit card company for monitoring my card and catching the unusual activity. I thanked them profusely for their diligence. I’ve had this card for about nine years and just recently got the balance down to under $400. Today I will be scanning my computer with extra protection just to make sure something is not lurking on here that’s giving out my personal information. Doubtful, but I just want to be sure. No matter what…you still feel violated. In the meantime make sure you are careful out there….it really IS a jungle.

That just sucks. I'm so glad they caught it and didn't hold you responsible.

ooh, I never thought of the drive thru liquor store...they take the card and could just write down all the numbers.

Guess I better quit being so lazy. :0

Fast food is also a bad one. It happened to us too . A few years ago, they charged a uhaul and spent 800.00 paid to some jail in Arizona.
Seems like they went and busted someone out of prison????

If they ever caught them , we were never informed about it.

How damn rude!!!
I always wonder, who raises these kind of people???

It is a jungle out there:)

Have a good night!

Oh, Val, thank God they caught it! How horrible! I'm so glad the company will take care of it and it won't reflect on you. What a way to start the new year. Sheesh!

Take care and I'm glad you're feeling better!

Don't you just feel violated? That's how I felt when my car was stolen. It was the last thing I thought would happen in a small, little southern town. My grandmother never locked her house a day in her life, nor took the keys out of her car. The world must be changing and I need to grow up and change along with it. Glad you are not going to be responsible for those charges.

Wow..good for your card company for monitoring so closely..My mother deeply distrusts card companies..and I can see why..with all those wackos out there... It's a good warning to all your readers to be more careful...!

holy crap ...
you know we were talkin about this stuff not long ago---
remember--you did do online christmas shopping, right?
maybe you could check with those places, and ask if any security was compromised..altho-they usually will notify you if that happens. i have had my ban k (s) close out cards a couple times for that reason. if they get contacted that something has happened like stolen receipts or info etc.
really.. i think it may be time to move to cash only spending.. but it seems so many people want credit card info these days. ya can't even order a damn pizza anymore without a credit card.
just one of those things..
but you are very lucky they caught it and know it's not you-and are not making you pay it.
(we still haven't got our piddly 150 back..may never) oh well.
but i do know how it is to be robbed.. it is my middle name..
so i am sorry you have to go thru it.
take care-

Well doesn't that just suck? Seems its happening all over..I hear about it at least once every day. I really think I am going to join one of those companies that guarantee no identity theft, yes, they cost, but losing everything to something like this would be so awful. It sounds like you got lucky, even though it must not feel that way. We have had a brush or two with things of this nature several years ago, rental cars in places we had never been...hotel rooms...and the card companies didn't make us pay, either. It does make you wonder, though, who DOES pay, as we all know the guilty never do. I suppose we all end up paying, one way or another. Isn't this wonderful technological world just something? ugh...

You were very wise to call thew number on the back of the card. I was a little surprised that they emailed you instead of immediately called as they have done to me in the past.

Sometimes it pays to be diligent in checking emails doesn't it! :-)

I use my credit card a lot and I think I will start being more careful as well.

Take care!

Good for you, I am so glad--what an absolute nightmare.

Thinking of you, even if not writing much. Thinking of you very much and wishing you better soon,
be well, Val.

pardon my language, but that pisses me off. My father in law works with writing programs to detect fraud and even he says that cc's are supposed to call you when they send out that type of alert..
you were wise to follow the number on the back of your card. At least it's all credited, but at your time and expense.

I've been a victim of Credit fraud a few times, and it's exhausting..
hope it's all straightened out. And rest assured, karma will get that little bugger..

Always,
Crusty!

I check my accounts online at least once a week, just to make sure nothing funny is going on. Glad you didn't have to pay for someone else's vacation to Hawaii, or wherever you go that costs 2 thousand bucks!
